Chelsea have reaped the rewards of their £42.5 million investment in Cole Palmer, the former Manchester City academy starlet. Palmer admits that even he didn’t expect his “difficult decision” to leave City to pay off so quickly.

A Successful Transition

Palmer, who was one of the standout players in the Premier League last season, scored 22 league goals and earned a spot in England’s Euro 2024 squad. The 22-year-old made the switch from Manchester City to Chelsea last summer, seeking more regular first-team football. Despite City’s recent Treble win and his long association with the club since the under-8s level, Palmer felt the need to move to further his career.

“I wanted to play football and show everyone what I could do. I felt I was ready. But I didn’t think it would go this well!” said Palmer. “It’s my first season, and I thought I’d go there, hopefully play – but it’s gone much better than I could have imagined. I definitely feel I was justified. I made a difficult decision to leave Man City and go to Chelsea, but thankfully it’s paying off, and hopefully, it will continue to do so.”

National Recognition

Palmer’s impressive form saw him win the European under-21 Championship with England last summer, leading to his promotion to the senior team. Gareth Southgate included him in the squad as a reward for his stellar performances at Chelsea. Palmer, who has two senior caps, is optimistic about England’s chances this summer.

“There’s a lot of talent in the squad, everyone can see that,” said Palmer. “I’m thrilled to represent England. We’ve got amazing players, and hopefully, the team can gel together and win a tournament. The fans are amazing, and I just want to make everyone proud.”

Embracing the Senior Setup

Palmer noted the difference between the senior team and the under-21s. “I knew a few of the seniors from City and Chelsea, and it was good to be there, but it was very different from the under-21s. I’ve only been twice, so I’m not used to it, but hopefully, getting picked will help me get used to it. It’s more intense with pros who have been involved for many years. It’s great.”

Giving Back to the Community

Palmer, who grew up as a Manchester United fan idolizing Wayne Rooney, is passionate about supporting grassroots football. He is backing Cif’s Re-Kicks campaign, which provides kit and equipment to young players from disadvantaged backgrounds.

“Kids deserve an equal chance,” said Palmer. “When I was growing up, I wanted new boots, and it’s good to give kids that opportunity. The cost of playing football was a big problem for families, and in some cases, it wasn’t a reality. That’s why the Cif Re-Kicks initiative is so important to me. I’m partnering with Cif to help keep young people involved in the sport and inspire them to keep chasing their dreams on and off the pitch.”

Celebrating Success

Palmer’s goal celebrations, where he rubs his arms as if to keep warm, have become popular among young fans. “All my comments on Instagram were always saying ‘cold, Cold Palmer,’ so I did that celebration against Luton, and it just stuck from there. Seeing the kids do it makes me laugh, they enjoy it, and it’s a fun thing to do.”

Reflecting on his favorite goals, Palmer said, “I like the United one for pure emotion. The Everton one at home, the one at Old Trafford. I’ve had a few that I like.”

Palmer’s journey from playing football with his friends to becoming a Premier League star and giving back to the community is a testament to his passion for the game and his commitment to inspiring the next generation.
