Reports suggest that AC Milan is on the verge of triggering Joshua Zirkzee’s €40m release clause, edging out competition from Arsenal for the Bologna striker’s signature this summer.

As Arsenal seeks to strengthen its attacking lineup for the upcoming 2024-25 season, Zirkzee has emerged as a prime target for the Gunners during the transfer window.

With an impressive track record of 14 goals and nine assists in 58 appearances for Bologna, the 23-year-old Dutchman has attracted attention from several top European clubs, including Manchester United and Inter Milan.

However, it seems AC Milan has taken the lead in the pursuit of Zirkzee. Recent reports indicate that the Serie A side has formally notified Bologna of their intention to pay the player’s release clause.

Once the fee is settled, AC Milan won’t require further negotiations with Bologna. However, the club is still in the process of finalizing personal terms with Zirkzee and his representative.

Zirkzee’s preference to remain in Italy provides AC Milan with an advantage over competitors like Arsenal and Manchester United. Additionally, AC Milan’s swift action has placed them ahead of their city rivals, Inter.

Nevertheless, Inter remains hopeful that talks could stall, allowing them to swoop in and secure Zirkzee’s services.

Inter’s vice-president, Javier Zanetti, has praised Zirkzee’s abilities, highlighting his potential contribution to any top-tier team.

Despite being a potential candidate for the Netherlands squad at Euro 2024, Zirkzee was not included in Ronald Koeman’s preliminary selection.

Having joined Bologna from Bayern Munich for €8.5m in August 2022, Zirkzee’s former club holds a buy-back option. However, Bayern has shown no indication of activating it this summer.
