Lautaro Martinez has provided an update on his future with Inter Milan amid rumors of a possible departure from San Siro.
Since joining Inter from Racing Club in 2018, Martinez has become a key player for the team and one of Europe’s top strikers. He has scored 129 goals in 282 appearances across all competitions for Inter, including 27 goals in the 2023-24 season alone.
The 26-year-old was named Inter captain last summer and has led the club to another Serie A title this season, scoring 24 goals in 33 league matches, putting him in a strong position to win the Golden Boot. Martinez, who won the 2022 World Cup with Argentina, has also won two Coppa Italias and three Supercoppa Italianas with Inter and reached the Champions League final last season.
Premier League Interest
Martinez’s standout performances have attracted attention from top European clubs, including some in the Premier League.
Manchester United is reportedly considering Martinez as a potential summer target to bolster their attack and provide competition for Rasmus Hojlund. Arsenal is also interested, having shifted their focus from Brentford’s Ivan Toney to Martinez.
In addition to Premier League interest, clubs from Saudi Arabia are monitoring Martinez’s situation, with his current contract set to expire in 2026.
Martinez Committed to Inter
Despite the interest from other clubs, Martinez has indicated that he is close to signing a new contract with Inter. In an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, he stated, “We are close to the agreement with Inter over a new long-term deal. It’s just about a few details. I wanted to get it done by the end of this week, but it could be delayed. I don’t know what is going to happen, but there are no problems.”
Inter’s sporting director, Piero Ausilio, recently confirmed the club’s intention to extend Martinez’s contract, aiming to finalize the deal before the 2024-25 season begins.
Martinez will soon shift his focus to international duties, as he has been named in Argentina’s provisional 30-man squad for Copa America 2024 later this summer.
