Manchester United Puts Kobbie Mainoo Contract Talks on Hold

Manchester United is expected to offer Kobbie Mainoo a new contract after his standout performances in the FA Cup final. However, the club will likely wait until after the summer transfer window closes to finalize the offer.
Mainoo, 19, has had a breakthrough year at Old Trafford, establishing himself as a key player for the Red Devils ahead of the 2024-25 season. He quickly became a fan favourite after making his Premier League debut against Everton in November and has continued to impress ever since. His stellar performances have even earned him his first national team cap and consideration for Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024 in Germany.
Despite already signing a three-year contract last February, which runs until June 2026, United plans to offer Mainoo a new and improved deal to reflect his growing importance to the team. According to The Telegraph, detailed contract discussions will be postponed until after the summer transfer window closes on August 30th. This delay is due to United’s extensive plans to reshape the squad, possibly under a new manager, given Erik ten Hag’s uncertain future.
Mainoo’s representatives are reportedly calm about the situation, with no pressure coming from their side. The player’s current contract includes performance-based triggers that have already led to salary increases throughout the season.
Regardless of the managerial situation, Manchester United is preparing for a significant squad overhaul, with plans to build around Alejandro Garnacho, Rasmus Hojlund, and Mainoo. Garnacho and Mainoo made history as the first teenage duo to score in the same FA Cup final, helping the Red Devils defeat Manchester City at Wembley Stadium. Mainoo also became the youngest goalscorer in an FA Cup final since John Sissons in 1964.
During the 2023-24 campaign, Mainoo made 32 appearances across all competitions and scored five goals, including crucial strikes against Liverpool and Newcastle United.
