Why Sterling started as a left back vs RB Salzburg
Chelsea’s new manager Graham Potter made his debut for the club in the UCL on Wednesday when his side hosted RB Salzburg.
One of the highlights from the match was that Chelsea summer signing Raheem Sterling was deployed as a left wing-back.
The left wing back was usually occupied by either Ben Chilwell or Marc Cucurella.
However, Potter chose to start Sterling, who was up to the task in this position and went on to score his fourth goal in all competitions for Chelsea.
While Chelsea had to settle for a 1-1 draw with the visitor, they however, dominated the match and had the opportunity to score more than one goal.
Speaking on his tactics, Potter told Metro, “It was a back three as far as I was concerned with Reece and Raheem giving us the width. We wanted to get some dangerous width, and Reece and Raheem were that. Raheem is really good at attacking a backline and scored a fantastic goal. I thought he was really good in the game.”
