Chelsea striker and Belgium international Romelu Lukaku has tendered a public apology to the club for the “upset that he caused” after he suggested in an interview that he was unhappy at Stamford Bridge.

Lukaku, who Chelsea signed for £97.5m during the last summer transfer window, insinuated that he wanted to return to Inter Milan in the near future.

He claimed that he was unhappy with ‘his current situation’ at Chelsea and also criticised Thomas Tuchel’s style of football.

The statement saw Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel drop him from his squad for Sunday’s Premier League fixture with Liverpool.

However, in a statement on Tuesday, Tuchel confirmed that the 28-year-old striker had returned to the squad ahead of Wednesday’s EFL Cup tie with Tottenham Hotspur.

Tuchel, in a pre-match statement, revealed that the Belgian stat had apologised for the interview given to Sky Sport Italia and was determined to ‘clean the mess up’.

Chelsea would later on Tuesday evening share a 41-second video where Lukaku says sorry for his comments and expresses a desire to prove his commitment to the club.
