Lampard on choice goalkeeper
Ahead of Chelsea’s game vs Brighton on Saturday, the club’s interim manager Frank Lampard has indicated who would be his first-choice goalkeeper.
Recall that Edouard Mendy was Lampard’s first-choice goalkeeper during his first time as Chelsea manager, but Kepa Arrizabalaga has been in that position this season.
Following, Lampard’s return a few days ago, there has been speculation over whether that may change.
‘I don’t see any reasons to do anything differently at the moment, with Kepa’s performances and maturity,’ Lampard said in a statement via Chelsea’s website.
‘I’ve maybe matured as a coach as I’ve come back, he has matured as a player. I think he has been in good form and Edou has had a couple of injuries. He is still carrying a small one at the moment so the position as you see it doesn’t change.’
This season, Mendy, who returned from the World Cup with a shoulder injury and in January, had surgery on a fractured finger suffered in training, which limited him to 11 appearances this season.
‘I’m not judging anything on my previous time at the club as opposed to what is in front of me now,’ emphasised Lampard.
