Chelsea goalkeeper and Spain international Arrizabalga Kepa has sent some words of assurance to the Blues ahead of their January fixtures.

This is because come January 2022, Chelsea will be without their number one goalie Edouard Mendy who will resume international duty for his home country Senegal in the African Cup of Nation AFCON.

Mendy will be gone for at least two months, which means the Thomas Tuchel’s led Chelsea squad will have to rely on Kepa to put up an impressive performance during Mendy’s absence.

Kepa, who was impressive for Chelsea during their Carabao fixture vs Southampton on Tuesday, admitted that he is aware of such a scenario as he suggested that he did not want to think too far ahead at this stage.

Speaking to reporters after Tuesday’s match, Kepa said, “it is two months away. Of course, we know it can happen and I will be ready but we have a lot of games until we start thinking about that.

“Let’s go step by step and we’ll see what happens. If he goes to the African Cup, all the best and I’ll be ready. But it’s still a long way to arrive at that point.”

The Spaniard has made only three appearances for the Blues this season.
