Chelsea’s transfer dealings are set to dominate headlines once again this summer, and discussions surrounding Ian Maatsen’s future are on the agenda following his successful loan spell at Borussia Dortmund since January.

Despite gearing up for a Champions League final, Maatsen’s potential move away from Chelsea could be addressed before he faces Real Madrid on the pitch.

Under Mauricio Pochettino, the Dutch defender struggled for game time after turning down a £31.5 million move to Burnley last summer. However, Maatsen quickly settled in at Borussia Dortmund and has been a key player as they reach the pinnacle of European football.

During his loan spell, Maatsen has notched up three goals and two assists in 22 appearances for the German side. Dortmund is reportedly keen to secure his services permanently, although his £35 million release clause might pose a challenge.

Despite the lack of a buyout clause in Maatsen’s loan deal, Dortmund is eager to initiate talks to potentially reduce the transfer fee. Maatsen himself has expressed a desire to stay with the club, praising the trust and confidence they’ve shown in him.

While the Premier League transfer window opens on June 14th, international deals can’t be finalized until July 1st. Dortmund might aim to finalize negotiations within this window to prevent Chelsea from entertaining other offers. Maatsen’s preference to remain in Germany could strengthen Dortmund’s bargaining position and help alleviate financial pressure on Chelsea.
