Why Fernandes was benched vs Leicester City

Manchester United played Leicester City in the FA Cup over the weekend, with the game ending in an embarrassing defeat for the Red Devils.

The game ended with a 3-1 scoreline with Kelechi Iheanacho scoring a brace and a strike from Youri Tielemans.

This was more than enough for Leicester to knock out Man United from the FA Cup.

Following the match, many pointed fingers at Ole Solksjaaer for failing to start Bruno Fernandes in the midfield.

Speaking on why he didn’t start Fernandes, Ole noted that the midfielder needs the rest as he was always playing. He noted that the top midfielder was not inhuman.

Explaining his decision to bench Fernandes, Solskjaer said in his post-match press conference, “Every team selection has reasons behind it.

“Bruno has played very, very much football. He broke all his records on Thursday night [at the San Siro] physically statistically, and the boy is not inhuman. a

Ole noted that Fernandes is a human being and he’s played a game every three or four days. The coach revealed he saw the game vs. Leicester City as a chance to start with both Donny [van de Beek] and Paul [Pogba].

Ole stressed that the accumulation of games may be caught up with the club but sometimes the coach has to make decisions for the benefit of both the team and the player.
