EPL: Why Fernandes was shown a red card Vs Tottenham

The red card Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes was shown during their Sunday match against Tottenham Hotspur has been addressed by the Premier League.

According to the football body, the Red Devils captain, Bruno Fernandes, was sent off against the Hotspurs for “serious foul play”.

Fernandes was shown a straight red card following a tackle on James Maddison.

The incident occured in the 42nd minute of the match with the Red Devils 1-0 down, thanks to Brennan Johnson’s finish.

The Premier League Match Centre in a tweet via its X, formerly Twitter, handle confirmed that the red card was reviewed by VAR.

According to the tweet, the referee issued a red card to Fernandes for a challenge on Maddison.

“The VAR checked and confirmed the referee’s call of serious foul play,” the football body said.

Meanwhile the match ended in a defeat for Man Utd with Tottenham Hotspur scoring three goals at Old Trafford.

This is a blow on the Red Devils who hoping to compete for the EPL title this season as they are now seated at the 12th spot.

The recent defeat comes after Man Utd’s draw to Dutch side Twente in the UEFA Europa League.
