Liverpool Sets £20m Asking Price for Sepp van den Berg Amid Brentford and Southampton Interest

6 months agoon
Liverpool have reportedly set a £20 million valuation on Sepp van den Berg, attracting interest from Brentford and newly-promoted Southampton.
Background on Sepp van den Berg
The 22-year-old defender began his career at Dutch club PEC Zwolle before moving to Liverpool in the summer of 2019. Despite being with the Reds for five years, van den Berg has made only four first-team appearances, spending most of his time on loan at Preston North End, Schalke 04, and Mainz 05.
Van den Berg recently completed an impressive loan spell at Mainz, featuring in 33 of the club’s 34 Bundesliga matches during the 2023-24 season, helping them secure their place in the league.
Liverpool’s Decision Pending
Liverpool has yet to decide whether to sell van den Berg or integrate him into the first-team squad for the upcoming season under new manager Arne Slot. According to The Athletic, if Liverpool opts to sell, they will seek a £20 million fee.
Interest from Other Clubs
Brentford and Southampton are among the clubs interested in van den Berg. Brentford aims to strengthen their defense after conceding 65 goals in the Premier League last season, a sharp increase from the 46 goals conceded the previous season. Meanwhile, Southampton is already planning their transfer strategy following their 1-0 victory against Leeds United in the Championship playoff final.
Van den Berg is also reportedly a target for Wolfsburg and Ajax. Mainz is keen to retain the Dutch defender, but meeting Liverpool’s financial demands may prove challenging.
Potential to Stay at Anfield
There is still a possibility that van den Berg could remain at Liverpool, especially if he impresses during pre-season. With Joel Matip set to leave upon the expiry of his contract, a spot will open up in Liverpool’s defense, giving van den Berg a chance to secure a place in the squad.
