World Cup: Chelsea star retires from international duty as Croatia kick out Brazil
Chelsea star Thiago Silva has expressed regret at his inability to lift the World Cup during his career as he finally retires from international duties after Brazil’s exit from Qatar.
The 38-year-old defender came into the tournament with Brazil widely tipped as favourites to win the trophy but watched helplessly as they fell 4-2 in a penalty shootout to Croatia on Friday.
The Chelsea star has now said he would now hope to win the trophy as a coach in any other role in the national team.
Neymar put Brazil in front in the extra time and it all looked like the South Americans were cruising to victory but Bruno Petkovic broke their hearts with just a few minutes to the end of 120 minutes.
Silva told beIN Sports: “Sadly as a player, I am not going to get to lift this trophy.
“Who knows if in the future I will get the chance in another role.
‘It’s difficult. But despite the sadness, life needs to move on.”
