Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has opened up on why he named Reece James as the club’s new goalkeeper ahead of the new season set to commence this weekend.

This comes after James replaced Cesar Azpilicueta, who left for Spanish club Atletico Madrid, as the Blues’ new captain.

Recall that James wore the armband during the Blues’ pre-season tour, the academy graduate has now been handed the band permanently.

Pochettino in a statement said he picked James because of his attitude and dedication to the club.

“This is a decision taken by me and the club. We are very pleased Reece will captain the side this season.

“He leads by example and his attitude and dedication to Chelsea has been clear throughout pre-season. He proudly wore the armband during our summer tour and will take up the challenge of leading our squad with his own approach and ideas,” Pochettino said.
