France right-back defender, Jonathan Clauss, in a recent statement has opened up on why he rejected a move to Chelsea this summer in favour of Marseille.

Clause said he favoured a move to Marseille because it came with the opportunity to play in the Uefa Champions League.

Aside from this, the Frenchman said Marseille ‘ticked all the boxes’.

Recall that the Blues were linked with moves for Clauss, who put an impressive form during his two-year stay with Lens.

The Frenchman, however, turned down the Blues’ interest as he stayed back in France with Marseille signing him for €7.5 million on a three-year deal.

“I didn’t want to sign for Chelsea to one day say I signed for Chelsea,” Clauss told Info Sport (via Evening Standard).

“It was really to try and keep playing, to discover the Champions League. Marseille ticked all the boxes I was looking for.”

After he joined them in 2020, Clauss scored eight goals and created 19 goal assists for the French Ligue 1 side.
