Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has shared his take following the reports that defender Wesley Fofana has undergone anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction surgery.

Unlike some of the Blues players who missed Chelsea’s preseason squad owing to doubts about their future, Fofana did not travel to the USA for the summer tour due to specialist medical assessments, which finally ensured that an operation was required for the 22-year-old.

With the look of things, Fofana may not be available at the beginning of the season as he will now be sidelined.

Pochettino in a statement described the defender’s situation as bad news, adding that the entire Chelsea squad is sad.

“It’s really sad, really bad news. We feel so sad. All we can do is help him,” Pochettino said at his pre-match press conference ahead of Chelsea’s pre-season friendly against Wrexham in Chapel Hill.

“We know it’s a tough injury, but we hope he can be with the team as soon as possible.”
