Manchester United defender Harry Maguire was excited after scoring the lone goal in Manchester United’s 1-0 win over FC Copenhagen in the Champions League on Tuesday.

It is no news that Maguire experienced a tough period at Old Trafford as he struggled to gain regular first-team football under manager Erik ten Hag, with Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof all regarded ahead of him in the pecking order.

However, he was handed a chance against Copenhagen due to Martinez’s absence.

Maguire’s goal in the UCL is his first since February 2022 as Man Utd claimed their first three points in Group A this season.

Discussing his goal in an interview with MUTV, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News, Maguire said: “It was an amazing ball [from Eriksen]. It was really tough to get something from a corner tonight, their big centre half kept heading them all away, but it was a second phase and I knew I had the beating of the man that was picking me up.

“It was all about the delivery, which made it easy for me to hit the target from so close and an amazing feeling to score in front of the Stretford End in the Champions League and a big moment for myself, but more importantly, the team.”

“Playing for this club, there’s ups and downs,” Maguire added whilst stood next to Onana. “When you win, everyone is on top of the world and when you lose, there’s a crisis and it’s always someone’s fault. Andre is a big personality and he’ll get used to it.

“He’s going to be a big player for this club. He’s had a lot of scrutiny but we’ve been giving him far too much to deal with as a defence, so it’s a big moment for him and it’s a really high-standard penalty save. I’m really pleased for him.”
