Chelsea left-back defender Ben Chilwell in a recent statement has reacted to his red card during their Champions League quarter-final match against Real Madrid on Wednesday.

The English star took to social media to apologise to his teammates after he was sent off during the game at Santiago Bernabeu.

A highlight from the match showed that while the Blues were battling to equalise Karim Benzema’s first-half goal, Chilwell put his team into a further difficult situation when he was handed a red card shortly before the hour mark.

Chilwell hauled down Rodrygo and denied the Real forward a clear goalscoring opportunity.

In his social media post on Thursday, the defender reflected on the matter and wrote in his tweet, “Slept on it, and just want to apologise to my teammates and the fans.

“I made the decision in a split second last night and it was a mistake. I always give everything to the team and I will continue to do so. Thank you for the support.”
