Following Chelsea’s defeat to Dinamo Zagreb in their first UCL opening match on Tuesday night, former Manchester United star, Owen Hargreaves has criticised the Blues’ summer signing, Wesley Fofana for the 1-0 defeat.

Chelsea dominated the match in the beginning but got the shock of their lives in the 13th minute when Mislav Orsic scored the winning goal.

Fofana, who Chelsea signed from Leicester City in a deal worth around £75million in the just concluded transfer window was taken aside by Orsic, who headed the ball past the 21-year-old and sped away towards goal before slotting the ball over Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Owen Hargreaves said on BT Sport, “They bought Fofana for exactly this reason, to squeeze the pitch, play high, he can [track] runs in behind and he’s quick.

“But he didn’t look overly explosive in that one and I think Tuchel will be worried that they’re conceding soft goals when they’re dominating games.

“If you’d told me he’s not winning that race, I’d have said: no chance.

“They’ve just spent £70m on him because he’s aggressive and he’s quick. I’m surprised he doesn’t get back. Young kids, they want to rely on their athleticism.”
