Chelsea have entered the race to sign Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, as new manager Enzo Maresca looks to strengthen his options in goal.

The Blues are exploring a move for the Argentina international following inconsistent performances from Robert Sánchez and Filip Jørgensen last season.

According to DSports via InfoBae, Maresca has approved the pursuit of Martinez after discussions with assistant coach Willy Caballero, who previously worked with the 2022 World Cup winner. The 31-year-old is widely regarded for his leadership and shot-stopping ability and would bring top-level experience to Chelsea’s backline.

However, Chelsea face stiff competition. Martinez is reportedly favouring a move to Manchester United, who are also in the market for a new goalkeeper. The Argentine is said to be “dreaming” of a switch to Old Trafford, placing the Red Devils ahead in the race for his signature.

Interest in Martinez extends beyond the Premier League. Turkish giants Galatasaray and Spanish club Atletico Madrid are also closely monitoring his situation, making it a competitive race for the Villa star.

Chelsea’s growing interest signals a desire to upgrade their goalkeeping department, but they may need to move swiftly and convincingly if they are to beat rivals to his signature.

Martinez’s future remains uncertain, but a high-profile summer transfer looks increasingly likely.
