The Italian Serie A will get five spots in next season’s UEFA Champions League after they secured one of the two extra places for performance across the three European tournament this season.

Recall that UEFA announced it would reward two leagues with an extra spot through the European Performance Spots.

The Italian league’s place in the top two was secured, after three of clubs from the country made the semi-finals, while the Premier League lost four of its five remaining clubs at the quarter-final stage.

Although, no Serie A side qualified for the quarter-finals of the Champions League, however, AS Roma and Atalanta reaching the semis of the Europa League, and Fiorentina into the last four of the Europa Conference League, the league won the highest coefficient score from all leagues and cannot finish outside the top two.

The German Bundesliga are set to finish in second place of the Performance Spots, as Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen kicked out English clubs Arsenal and West Ham and Borussia Dortmund went through in the Champions League.

Following this latest update, the fifth place in the Serie A will play in the Champions League next season.

AS Roma are currently at the 5th spot, followed by Atalanta in sixth.

It, however, gets more interesting because should either of those clubs win the Europa League and finish outside the top four then Serie A will get six teams in the Champions League. This also applies to Borussia Dortmund, who sit fifth in the Bundesliga.
