Former Arsenal defender, Mikael Silvestre has reacted to the club’s move for Matthijs de Ligt, who currently plays for Bayern Munich.

Silvestre expressed concerns for the Gunner’s move to sign De Ligt to their defence department.

Arsenal are said to be interested in the Netherlands international to boost their central defensive department, according to The Athletic.

While the likes of William Saliba and Gabriel play in the central defensive position, Arsenal also have players like Takehiro Tomiyasu, Ben White, Jakub Kiwior and Jurrien Timber, who can also play in the position.

However, Silvestre is not sure of De Ligt’s impact if he moves to Emirates Stadium.

“I haven’t had the chance to see a lot of De Ligt lately and assess his current form. But it’s evident that he’s not realising his potential,” Silvestre told the Esports community GG Recon (via HITC).

“He was unbelievable for Ajax when they reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2019. But, since then, we have not seen a great improvement from Matthijs in terms of his development and that raises some questions.”

“Can he go to the next level? Can he get to the same level as Virgil van Dijk? When you show so much maturity at a young age, like he did as the captain of Ajax, you expect these players to kick on”, Silvestre added.
