Atletico Madrid Turn Down Opportunity to Re-Sign Arsenal Midfielder

Atletico Madrid have reportedly declined the chance to bring Thomas Partey back to the club as the midfielder prepares to leave Arsenal on a free transfer this summer.
Partey’s current contract at Arsenal is set to expire on June 30, and with no agreement reached over an extension, the 31-year-old is expected to seek a new challenge after five seasons in North London.
Arsenal had initially hoped to keep the Ghana international for another year, but negotiations broke down earlier this month.
As the Gunners begin exploring midfield replacements, Partey is evaluating his options ahead of what could be his final major move in European football. However, one potential destination has already been ruled out — his former club, Atletico Madrid.
According to reports from Spanish outlet Estadio Deportivo, Atletico have decided against re-signing Partey, despite his previous successful spell under manager Diego Simeone. The Ghanaian midfielder spent eight years at the La Liga club, making over 180 appearances before joining Arsenal in 2020.
Atletico are instead said to be focusing their attention on securing a deal for Real Betis midfielder Johnny Cardoso.
The Brazilian-American has impressed in La Liga, and negotiations for a transfer valued at approximately €40 million (£34.2 million) are reportedly advancing.
With Atletico no longer in the frame, Partey’s next destination remains uncertain, but interest is expected from several European and Middle Eastern clubs as the summer window progresses.
