Arsenal to Finalize £27 Million Transfer for David Raya, Securing First Summer Signing

Arsenal are set to announce the permanent signing of David Raya from Brentford for a fee of £27 million.
Mikel Arteta raised eyebrows last season when he signed the Spain international on loan, choosing to replace Aaron Ramsdale.
Initially, Raya struggled to prove he was an upgrade over Ramsdale, who had become a fan favorite during his first two years at the Emirates Stadium.
However, Raya found his form, as the season progressed. His penalty-saving heroics were crucial in Arsenal’s Champions League run, helping the team reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 2009.
By the end of the campaign, Raya had secured the Golden Glove award with 16 clean sheets, solidifying his position as the club’s No.1 goalkeeper.
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Arsenal will now make Raya’s move permanent. This decision leaves Ramsdale’s future uncertain, as the former Sheffield United goalkeeper is unlikely to accept a backup role.
Newcastle had shown interest in Ramsdale but were deterred by Arsenal’s valuation. If Ramsdale departs, Arsenal plans to bring in a new No.2 goalkeeper to compete with Raya.
The Gunners have been linked with several potential candidates, including Monza’s Michele Di Gregorio, Brighton’s Jason Steele, and Feyenoord’s Justin Bijlow.
Additionally, Arteta has expressed interest in former Arsenal teammate Wojciech Szczesny.
The experienced Poland international, who fits the homegrown criteria Arsenal prioritize, has one year left on his Juventus contract.
With Juventus looking to sign Michele Di Gregorio, Szczesny’s £100,000-a-week wages might be a hurdle, but he remains a strong contender.
As Arsenal prepare to finalize Raya’s transfer, the club continues to assess its goalkeeping options to ensure a robust lineup for the upcoming season.
