Arsenal Could Land Long-Term Arteta Target for Free After Emotional Exit

Arsenal may finally have the opportunity to sign a long-term Mikel Arteta target — without spending a fee — after the striker became a free agent following an emotional decision to leave his current club.

The player, who was first identified by Arteta nearly four years ago, now presents a cost-effective solution as the Gunners turn their attention to bolstering their attacking options.

Having already prioritised and completed several defensive additions this summer, Arsenal are now shifting focus to strengthening their frontline. The club is reportedly planning to sign two forwards: a wide player and a traditional No. 9.

While negotiations continue with Valencia over a separate striker deal — following a rejected £17 million bid — Arsenal are also exploring free-agent opportunities to add further depth and experience to their attacking lineup.

With a £60 million move for Benjamin Šeško still under discussion and interest in Viktor Gyökeres also ongoing, adding a proven forward on a free transfer could represent smart business. Not only would it give Arteta an experienced alternative in rotation, but it would also free up financial resources for other key targets.

This development marks a potential turning point in Arsenal’s transfer strategy, as they look to combine big-money investments with opportunistic, low-cost acquisitions. As Arteta seeks to build a squad capable of winning the Premier League, bringing in a familiar target for free could prove both nostalgic and strategic.
