Manchester United legend reveals how shameful it is Red Devils couldn’t keep top player

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has revealed how shameful it is that the red devils couldn’t keep hold of Memphis Depay during an unsettled period at the club.

Depay arrived at Manchester United full of expectations but couldn’t keep up with the pace and had to leave for Lyon, where he shone brightly.

The Netherland international scored just two Premier League goals in his 18 months at Manchester United but could find the back of the net for Lyon 76 times in 178 appearances.

His performance at Lyon attracted interest from top clubs in Europe, but Barcelona agreed with him after his contract expires with Lyon at the end of June.

Neville has now insisted that Depay could have become an essential player for Manchester United if given a chance.

Speaking with ITV, Neville stated that Depay came to Manchester United when the club wasn’t in a stable position.

Once Van Gaal had left, and when Jose came in, he didn’t want to work with Depay because of what he did on and off the pitch.

Neville added that when Depay came to United, they did not have the time for him, which is a shame, but he has proved with the maturity that he has turned into a top player.
