Manchester United Leading Race for Sporting Lisbon Defender Goncalo Inacio

Manchester United are reportedly advancing in their pursuit of Sporting Lisbon defender Goncalo Inacio.

The club’s hierarchy is currently assessing the head coach situation with Erik ten Hag undergoing an end-of-season review. Despite this, United’s newly-formed football operations team is poised to progress with their summer transfer plans.

Ten Hag has identified acquiring a new central defender as a top priority, following the free transfer departure of Raphael Varane and the potential exit of Jonny Evans. United have been linked with Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite and Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo, but Inacio appears to be their primary target.

United Ready to Intensify Inacio Pursuit

According to O Jogo, United are focused on securing Inacio before the new season. The club’s recruitment team has collectively decided to approach the Portugal international, regardless of whether Ten Hag remains as head coach.

Inacio has a €60 million (£51.08 million) release clause in his contract, but United are expected to negotiate to lower this fee. Liverpool are also monitoring the situation as they seek to strengthen their centre-back options.

Inacio’s Agent Authorized to Entertain Offers

A separate report from Record states that Inacio’s agent has been authorized by Sporting to entertain offers from other clubs. This development may complicate United’s efforts, especially since they cannot offer Inacio Champions League football.

Inacio is aiming to represent Portugal at Euro 2024, competing for a spot alongside Ruben Dias and Pepe. If he excels in the tournament and comes off a title-winning Primeira Liga campaign, Sporting might be less willing to compromise on the transfer fee.
