Why Tuchel played Werner vs Southampton

Chelsea striker and Germany international Timo Werner was one of the biggest winners in the Blues’ victory vs Southampton on Saturday.

Warner scored a brace for the Blues out of the six goals at St. Mary.

Having started the German striker against Brentford, which ended in a 4-1 defeat, Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel left him on the bench in the midweek game against Real Madrid in the Uefa Champions League.

However, Tuchel restored him to the team on Saturday, and Werner responded well with two goals as well as hitting the woodwork three times.

Tuchel, in a post-match statement, has now revealed why he started Werner vs Southampton.

He said, ‘We decided to play with two strikers, it was his favourite position against an opponent where we knew they would press high.’

‘The connection was amazing with Kai and Mason and Kova. He loves to play with them and it was an opponent where we could imagine finding spaces in behind because it’s a higher attacking opponent. So it was set out for him to deliver and make a statement that he does not give up and is still an important player of this club. He did it and it was strong but also very necessary.’
