Why Man City didn’t join Chelsea in the race to sign Saul Niguez

It has been revealed that Man City were the major club to sign Saul Niguez from Atletico Madrid before he was signed by Chelsea.

The Blues went on sign Saul this summer on loan from Atlectico Madrid with the option of signing him permanently at £30 million.

A report via Daily Star revealed that Manchester City wanted to sign Saul but the club’s manager, Pep Guardiola was not interested in bringing Saul to his squad, thus the deal was turned down.

The report added that Guardiola’s side were approached by the Spanish La Liga leaders, who proposed a swap deal involving Bernardo Silva in a player-plus-cash move.

Man City were however not interested in the deal as they wanted a pay of £40m for Silva.

With the Citizens out of the way, the deal was made easy for the Blues as they went on to get a deal done and now Saul will hope to get a starting spot in Tuchel’s starting XI vs. Aston Villa this weekend.

Saul is Chelsea second major signing this summer after Romelu Lukaku, who was signed from the Italian side, Inter Milan.
