Chelsea’s £21m Deal Hits Delay as Xabi Alonso Pushes for Defensive Reinforcement

Chelsea’s pursuit of Rayo Vallecano left-back Pep Chavarria has encountered a fresh obstacle, with negotiations becoming more complicated after the Spanish club reportedly increased their asking price.

The Blues have been in direct discussions with Rayo Vallecano for around two weeks as they look to strengthen the left side of their defence following Marc Cucurella’s £52 million move to Real Madrid earlier this summer.

New head coach Xabi Alonso has identified Chavarria as a priority target and is eager to complete the signing before the start of the new season. The 28-year-old Spaniard is understood to be open to the move, viewing a switch to Stamford Bridge as an opportunity to take the next step in his career.

However, despite positive talks between the clubs, an agreement has yet to be reached after Rayo reportedly raised their valuation during negotiations, delaying what had initially appeared to be a straightforward transfer.

Chelsea remain determined to add another specialist left-back to provide depth and competition within Alonso’s squad. Strengthening the position has become increasingly important following Cucurella’s departure, leaving the Blues short of natural options on the left side of defence.

Club officials are expected to continue negotiations in the hope of reaching a compromise that satisfies both parties.

Chavarria remains Chelsea’s preferred choice, although the club are understood to be monitoring alternative options should discussions fail to produce an agreement.
