Why Giroud could lose his starting shirt in the Blues squad

Former Chelsea Captain Marcel Desailly has revealed his fear for Olivier Giroud as he noted that the Frenchman will struggle to maintain his position as the Blues leading striker over the course of the season.

Giroud’s future has been in the spotlight ever since Timo Werner was signed from RB Leipzig as the World Cup Winner was tipped to become the third preferred striker in the team.

However, Giroud has been able to prove a point in the team as his four-goal spree against Sevilla in the Champions League earlier in December have seen him regain his starting spot.

Despite this, his future have been under the spotlight with many claiming he’s ready to make a move during the January transfer window so as to secure a place in France European team.

Desailly while speaking to Goal now seems to buy from the idea as he noted that Giroud is not the future of Chelsea and he can never be the main man.

According to Desailly, Giroud can only be important at  the moment for the club so Lampard can be clever to study the opponents and use him in specific games against teams who doesn’t like facing a player with his strengths.

He however believes that Lampard has helped Giroud shine often by getting a lot out of him but he can’t be the first choice for Lampard as Giroud has Timo Werner and Tammy Abraham to compete with, so he can’t maintain his first-choice status from the start until the end.

Giroud was on target for Chelsea during their defeat to Wolves and will be eager to be back in the starting lineup when the blues take on West Ham United.
