CaughtOffside has reported growing interest from Saudi Arabian clubs in Romelu Lukaku, providing Chelsea with a potential solution to their ongoing efforts to offload the striker and his hefty wages.

Lukaku has just concluded another loan spell, leaving Chelsea eager to find a permanent move for him. According to sources, Saudi club Al Ittihad has emerged as the “favourite” to sign Lukaku, making him a “priority target” to replace the discontented Karim Benzema.

Chelsea has set a €45m transfer fee for Lukaku, who is set to play for Belgium in the upcoming Euros. While this fee is likely too steep for most Serie A teams, it is well within the budgets of the PIF-owned Saudi clubs.

Speculation continues about Lukaku potentially reuniting with Jose Mourinho at Fenerbahce or Antonio Conte at Napoli. However, it is unlikely these clubs could afford both the transfer fee and Lukaku’s wages.

The situation in the Saudi Pro League this summer will be interesting to watch. Unlike last year, when numerous Premier League players and other European stars flocked to the league, current activity levels are lower despite persistent rumors.

While some players may still transfer, and some clubs might find relief from significant financial burdens, it’s clear that the landscape has shifted. Lukaku is the type of high-profile player who could attract interest, but clubs should not assume a repeat of last year’s transfer frenzy.
