Portugal coach applauds this Chelsea target

Portugal coach Roberto Martinez in a recent statement rated Sporting striker, Viktor Gyokeres, highly as he described the Swedish player one of the best signings in Europe this season.

Recall that Gyokeres has been impressive for Sporting since joining them from Coventry City for €24m last summer.

He has scored 36 goals in 39 appearances, making him attract interest from several European clubs, including Arsenal and Chelsea, who are in need of a new striker.

The Blues were reported to have tabled a £73m bid to sign Gyokeres in January, but Sporting turned it down while demanding £85m as release clause.

However, Martinez praised Gyokeres’ form ahead of Portugal’s friendly game against Sweden on Thursday.

“For me, he was one of the best signings in the entire European market last summer,” Martinez said of Gyokeres at his press conference on Wednesday.

“And it is fantastic for him to be playing in Portuguese football.”
