Former Chelsea goalkeeper Willy Caballero has revealed why he refused to sign a contract extension at Stamford Bridge this summer and decided to leave the club as a free agent.

Willy Caballero has proven to be a reliable backup ever since he joined Chelsea from Manchester City on a free transfer but the 39-year-old was released in June.

Caballero was released alongside the likes of Marco van Ginkel and fellow goalkeeper Jamal Blackman just weeks after winning the Champions League.

The Argentina shot stopper who enjoyed four years at Stamford Bridge had not publicly spoken for the first time about why he took the decisive decision on his future.

Speaking with Goal, Caballero stated that some people didn’t understand why he turned down a contract as a third goalkeeper.

According to Caballero, he believe he’s playing at this age because he have always been motivated but as a third goalkeeper last season, he found it really tough.

Caballero noted that it was his first season as a third-choice goalkeeper and he was losing my motivation at Chelsea.

The 39 years old goalkeeper added that for this reason, he decided not renew with Chelsea, to try to find a new challenge to keep that passion alive inside.

Caballero is still looking for opportunities to find a new club, having had a trial at Brentford and been involved in a Malaga-based training camp for free-agent footballers.
