Levi Colwill has applauded Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino after his first call-up to the England national team squad.

Colwill is among the list of players who are currently on international duty all thanks to Pochettino.

After his loan spells at Huddersfield Town and Brighton, Colwill was integrated into the Blues first-team squad this summer by Pochettino.

The 20-year-old, who penned a new long-term contract in August, has started each of the Blues’ opening four Premier League matches and the Carabao Cup second-round victory over AFC Wimbledon.

‘Working with him, I know I’m going to improve,” Colwill explained this week while on international duty.

‘He’s such a good manager and he will push me. That’s what I need. I need someone there to give me that kick up the bum and say, “Keep going”. That’s what he does.

‘The big thing for me is on the first day I came in [for pre-season], he put an arm around me and showed me that he respects me as a person and also as a player. That allows me to work my hardest and makes me want to play my best for him.

‘That’s a big difference, him showing that there are two sides. The majority of managers may just look at you like a footballer, he doesn’t. That helps me play my best football.’
