Chelsea will regret allowing this defender join Aston Villa – Agbonlahor
Former football star, Gabriel Agbonlahor has reacted to trending reports linking Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen to his Aston Villa.
Agbonlahor, a former Aston Villa player, in a statement said Chelsea could regret allowing the 22-year-old defender leave Stamford Bridge this summer transfer window.
The Dutch defender is reportedly exiting Chelsea to join Aston Villa this summer.
A report via talkSPORT claimed that Aston Villa have sealed a deal worth about £35 million to sign Maatsen from the Blues.
Recall that Maatsen spent the second half of the 2023-24 season at German side Borussia Dortmund where he scored three goals and created two assists in 23 games across competitions.
Reacting to Maatsen’s link away from Chelsea, Agbonlahor said the are letting the defender go for £35-40 million because they already have Marc Cucurella and Ben Chilwell; which means they don’t need another left-back.
However, the former player believes Maatsen could end up being better than Cucurella and Chilwell.
Agbonlahor tipped Maatsen to be a player who is going to play every week as a six year deal with Aston Villa means he is going to be a starter.
With this, Agbonlahor thinks, the transfer is one that Chelsea will regret and one that Aston Villa fans are going to love.
