Chelsea’s Ian Maatsen appears to be reconsidering his future at Stamford Bridge, hinting at a potential change of heart.

The 22-year-old defender, who joined Chelsea’s academy in 2018, has struggled to cement a regular spot in the first team, making just 16 appearances across all competitions for the club.

A lack of playing time prompted his loan move to Borussia Dortmund, where he flourished under Edin Terzic, featuring prominently in both the Bundesliga and Champions League.

Maatsen’s impressive performances have caught the eye of Dortmund, who are keen to retain him, albeit at a lower price than Chelsea’s £35 million valuation.

Despite extending his contract with Chelsea until 2026, Maatsen remains undecided about his future, indicating that discussions with the club are yet to take place.

While he acknowledges Chelsea’s interest in his development, Maatsen is focused on his current responsibilities, particularly Dortmund’s upcoming Champions League final.

Reflecting on his time at Dortmund, Maatsen emphasized the opportunities provided by the club for young talents like himself, expressing gratitude for the chance to showcase his abilities.

Although his achievements at Dortmund haven’t secured him a spot in the Netherlands squad for Euro 2024, Maatsen remains determined to prove himself at the highest level, whether it’s at Chelsea or elsewhere.
