Ian Maatsen’s unfortunate mistake in the Champions League final has not deterred interest in him following an impressive six-month loan spell at Borussia Dortmund.

Despite the error, his significant contributions to Dortmund’s success have caught the attention of major clubs.

Borussia Dortmund is keen on securing Maatsen permanently, but according to Dharmesh Sheth of Sky Sports, Bayern Munich is also monitoring the situation. Maatsen’s £35m release clause could be activated by any interested club.

The prospect of Bayern Munich’s interest puts pressure on Dortmund to finalize the deal quickly, avoiding any potential disruption. Chelsea, eager to complete the sale before the June 30 accounting period cutoff, will be pleased with the increased competition for Maatsen.

From Chelsea’s perspective, multiple suitors for Maatsen is advantageous as it could drive up his transfer fee. Ideally, the club might consider retaining Maatsen and offloading another left-back, especially with the recent appointment of Enzo Maresca as manager. Maatsen’s ability to “invert” and transition into midfield was instrumental in transforming Dortmund’s season, making him an ideal player for Maresca’s tactical plans.

However, Maresca’s role is to work with the resources provided to him, without pushing for changes that disrupt the club’s financial strategy. Therefore, it is unlikely he will oppose a sale that Chelsea has been anticipating and financially planning for.
