Chelsea, Manchester City, Real Madrid to be ousted from Champions League semis?
Chelsea, Manchester City and Real Madrid have all been threatened with expulsion from the Champions League following the announcement of a European Super League.
The three Champions League semi-finalists are among 12 originator members from the breakaway competition, with fellow ESL clubs Arsenal and Manchester United competing for glory in the last four of the Europa League.
UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has effectively outlined his aims to stop European Super League players representing their national teams, and UEFA executive committee member Jesper Moller – also top of the Danish FA – needs to see the clubs “tossed out” of this present season’s continental competition.
Addressing Danish broadcaster DR, Moller said: There is an extraordinary executive meeting on Friday where I expect the 12 clubs to be thrown out.
I think that we, who love football, have had it. Someone has to draw the line and find out which way the clubs should go. We owe it to our fans and everyone who loves football.
The clubs should be thrown out and I expect it to happen on Friday. Then we will see how the Champions League will finish. I don’t think they can do it to the fans and to everyone who loves football.
During the end of the week, a few people negotiated with the opposite side, which isn’t reasonable for the President of UEFA and the individuals who have invested energy in the Champions League model in the previous years.
They can’t do that. There must be a few outcomes, and, this time, I think there will be.
Paris Saint-Germain are the lone team left in the Champions League not associated with the first ESL plans, while Arsenal and Manchester United are due of take on Villarreal and Roma respectively in the Europa League semi-finals.
