Chelsea have yet to decide on the future of Ian Maatsen, who is currently making an impact at Borussia Dortmund.

Ian Maatsen, currently on loan at Borussia Dortmund, has admitted that his future at Chelsea remains undecided, despite having signed a contract extension with the club until January 2026.

The versatile left-back joined Dortmund in January after starting just one Premier League game under Mauricio Pochettino, despite an impressive pre-season. Since his move, the 22-year-old has returned to the form he showcased with Burnley in the Championship, playing regularly in the Bundesliga and featuring in every minute of Dortmund’s UEFA Champions League knockout games.

Dortmund is interested in making Maatsen’s move permanent, enticed by his £35m release clause. However, Maatsen has expressed uncertainty about his future. “I still have a contract and after the summer, we’re going to decide where my future is going to be,” he said. “I came here to Dortmund to prove that I can play at the highest level and on the biggest stage, and that’s what I’m doing now.”

Maatsen’s future at Chelsea could be influenced by the imminent appointment of Enzo Maresca as head coach. Reports suggest that Maresca prefers a system where full-backs move inside to join the midfield, a role that Maatsen could excel in.

Despite his strong performances, Maatsen revealed that he has not yet had discussions with Chelsea about his future. “No, not yet,” he said. “They came a couple of times to Dortmund to see how I am, and they’re happy with my development.”
