Chelsea Eyeing Bayern Munich Defender, Top Insider Reveals

Chelsea’s long-standing interest in Dayot Upamecano, a player they once pursued during his time at RB Leipzig, appears to be reignited.

Despite his move to Bayern Munich seeming to close that chapter, recent insights suggest that the Blues are still keen on the talented French defender.

Renowned journalist Christian Falk confirmed the interest, noting the potential cost implications:

“Yes, it’s true: Chelsea would like Dayot Upamecano. It’s not clear yet whether he’ll have a chance next year. Vincent Kompany is looking at everyone, but would Bayern let him go? That would probably cost a lot of money. At the time, Bayern paid €42.5m to RB Leipzig,” Falk stated in quotes picked up by Give Me Sport.

The potential acquisition of Upamecano raises questions, particularly regarding Chelsea’s recent investments in defenders like Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile, who have yet to deliver consistent performances. Additionally, Upamecano’s struggles at Bayern Munich cast doubt on whether he aligns with new manager Enzo Maresca’s specific tactical vision.

Chelsea’s current defensive lineup is robust, featuring players such as Disasi, Badiashile, Wesley Fofana, Levi Colwill, and the newly signed Tosin Adarabioyo. This depth suggests that the urgency to sign another centre-back is not as pressing, especially with emerging talents from the academy. The potential sale of Trevoh Chalobah might create a vacancy, but even then, it seems a lower priority compared to other team needs.

While Falk’s information is credible, it might be slightly outdated given Chelsea’s recent defensive acquisitions. The significant financial outlay required for Upamecano makes the move less likely for this summer. Chelsea’s focus may instead turn to other areas requiring reinforcement as they continue to shape their squad under Maresca’s leadership.
