Chelsea defender Ben Chilwel has informed the club’s manager Mauricio Pochettino of his intention to be the Blues’ next captain.

The captain position became vacant at Stamford Bridge after the departure of the Blues most of the senior players, including former captain Cesar Azpilicueta.

As of now, Pochettino is yet to pick Azpilicueta’s replacement after the Spaniard left for Spanish side Atletico Madrid this summer.

There are speculations Reece James could be handed the band after he played the role during the Blues’ recent match against Newcastle United.

Aside from James, the likes of Thiago Silva, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Raheem Sterling and Enzo Fernandez are also in line for the position.

But Chilwell has openly declared his interest to take up the band after Azpilicueta.

“Yeah. I would love to be captain. I’m sure you’ve had that answer off a few of the players,” he told the club’s official website as quoted by Metro.

“Of course, Chelsea Football Club, I’d love to be captain.

“Whether I get it or not, it’s not going to take away from my role.”
