Arsenal Step Up Defensive Reinforcements as Transfer Talks Intensify

Arsenal are pressing ahead with their summer transfer plans, aiming to strengthen their defence and stay ahead of rivals Chelsea in the race to sign Ajax defender Jorrel Hato.
The Gunners have reportedly opened official talks with the Dutch club over a potential deal, as they look to build on the momentum following the £51 million capture of Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad.
Although Arsenal’s transfer window began slowly, both manager Mikel Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta have promised a “big” summer — and activity is starting to reflect that.
Hato, 18, is highly rated for his versatility, being able to play both as a left-back and centre-back. Ajax value the teenager at approximately €50 million (£43 million), and Arsenal appear keen to secure his signature quickly to fend off interest from Chelsea.
The Gunners’ left-back options were strengthened last season by the emergence of academy talent Myles Lewis-Skelly, who impressed in the second half of the campaign and is expected to sign a new long-term deal.
However, the club is eager to ensure healthy competition within the squad, and Hato’s arrival would bring depth and quality to the back line.
Meanwhile, Arsenal are also reportedly making progress on a separate £10 million deal with Fulham, which could further boost their squad options ahead of the 2025/26 season.
With agents returning for renewed discussions, Arsenal appear to be accelerating their transfer efforts in key areas of the pitch.
