Arsenal are reportedly closing in on a surprise £5 million deal to sign Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, raising questions from some corners of the football community — including former Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster.

The 30-year-old Spaniard, once the world’s most expensive goalkeeper following his £72 million transfer from Athletic Bilbao to Chelsea in 2018, has endured a turbulent Premier League career. After a promising start, Kepa eventually lost his place as Chelsea’s first-choice keeper due to inconsistent performances.

Most recently, Kepa enjoyed a more stable loan spell at Bournemouth, where he made 31 appearances and kept eight clean sheets. Despite his resurgence, he is no longer part of Chelsea’s long-term plans, opening the door to a potential move to north London.

Arsenal’s interest in the experienced shot-stopper is believed to be part of Mikel Arteta’s plan to add depth and experience to his goalkeeping options, particularly with doubts surrounding the futures of current backup keepers. However, Foster has expressed skepticism about the move, suggesting that Arsenal’s pursuit of Kepa may raise concerns given his mixed record in the Premier League.

While the deal would represent a bargain in financial terms, some fans and pundits are questioning whether Kepa is the right fit for a club competing for domestic and European honours. Nevertheless, with personal terms reportedly close to being agreed, the Gunners could finalise the deal in the coming days.
