Pennant Draws Núñez Comparison as Gyokeres Faces Scrutiny Over Arsenal Start

Viktor Gyokeres’ early months at Arsenal have prompted mixed reactions, with former Gunners winger Jermaine Pennant offering a measured but critical assessment of the striker’s adaptation to Premier League football.
Pennant has likened Gyokeres to Liverpool forward Darwin Núñez, suggesting both players share similar traits: physical presence, relentless effort and a tendency to miss chances they might be expected to convert. Signed as a potential difference-maker for Mikel Arteta’s title-chasing side, Gyokeres arrived in north London with significant expectations following an outstanding spell at Sporting CP.
During two prolific seasons in Portugal, the Sweden international scored an astonishing 97 goals in 102 appearances, form that persuaded Arsenal to invest heavily in his signature. The deal, which could rise to £63.6 million, was seen as a statement of intent as the club sought a striker capable of turning dominance into silverware.
However, Gyokeres’ transition has not been seamless. With only Championship experience in English football prior to his move, there were early doubts about how quickly he would adapt to the pace and physicality of the Premier League. Those concerns have lingered, with the 27-year-old managing five league goals in 15 appearances so far – a return that falls short of the levels expected from a leading striker in a title-contending side.
Pennant acknowledged that adjusting to a new league and system takes time but hinted that another profile of forward may have suited Arsenal better. While Gyokeres’ work rate and movement have impressed, consistency in front of goal remains a work in progress.
As Arsenal continue their push at the top of the table, Gyokeres’ ability to settle and deliver more regularly could yet prove decisive in shaping the club’s season.
