Deal Almost Done: Former Manchester United star affirms Barcelona move was “almost done”

Lyon skipper Memphis Depay has affirmed that his proposed deadline day move to Barcelona was “almost done” before crumbling.

Memphis Depay was intensely connected with Barcelona following the arrival of Ronald Koeman as coach, with the incoming manager recognizing Memphis Depay as one of his top targets having worked together for the Netherlands national team.

Lyon were also open to capitalizing on the forward instead of danger losing him on a free transfer when his contract lapses the following summer, and had even cut their asking price to £23m.

Nonetheless, La Liga rules after Covid implied that Barcelona would have expected to offload one player before getting Memphis Depay, and the breakdown of Ousmane Dembele’s loan move to Manchester United eventually implied that the Spanish giants couldn’t manage the cost of the Dutchman.

Memphis Depay has just scored four goals in six appearances for Lyon this season, having scored 15 times in 22 appearances last season.
