Arsenal’s hopes of signing Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimarães have suffered a significant setback after reports emerged that the Magpies have received no direct approach for the Brazilian international.

Strengthening the midfield remains one of Arsenal’s top priorities this summer, with Guimarães and Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers understood to be among Mikel Arteta’s preferred targets. However, despite speculation linking the Gunners with the Newcastle captain, there appears to be little progress toward a deal.

Earlier this week, The Athletic reported that Arsenal had submitted a verbal offer worth less than £60 million through intermediaries. The proposal was reportedly rejected by Newcastle, who remain determined to keep one of their most influential players.

Transfer journalist Ben Jacobs later clarified that Arsenal had only held exploratory discussions with Guimarães’ representatives, similar to the enquiries made by Manchester United before the transfer window officially opened on June 15. He added that, as of Thursday evening, Newcastle had not been contacted directly and had no intention of selling the midfielder.

Respected transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has echoed that stance, insisting Newcastle are not entertaining offers for the Brazil international this summer. The club view Guimarães as a cornerstone of Eddie Howe’s project and are eager to build around him rather than cash in.

Unless Newcastle soften their position or Arsenal significantly increase their efforts, a move for Guimarães appears increasingly unlikely. The latest developments could force the North London club to explore alternative midfield targets before the transfer window closes.
