Premier League legend Alan Shearer has thrown his weight behind Romelu Lukaku, as he stressed that the Chelsea striker’s lack of fitness contributed to Belgium’s early exit from the World Cup in Qatar.

According to Shearer, the rest of the Belgian squad are to be blamed for their crashing out in the group stage of the World Cup.

This comes as Belgium, who are considered the number two team in the world were kicked out of Qatar on Thursday after a goalless draw with Croatia.

African country Morocco led Group F in an unexpected turnout with 7 points 2 more than Croatia in second place.

Lukaku missed a couple of chances to put Belgium in the lead and has been widely criticised for their crashing out.

‘It’s not down to him [Belgium’s elimination],” Shearer told BBC.

“They will look at themselves and blame themselves. They didn’t do enough and they didn’t deserve to go through.

‘They tried, they created a few chances in the second-half but it was too little too late.

“It will hurt him [Lukaku].
