World Cup: Ferdinand expresses shock as Southgate snubs former Chelsea star

Former Man Utd star Rio Ferdinand has raised questions over the absence of AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori in the England squad for the 2022 World Cup.

Rio Ferdinand told FIVE: “The biggest thing I’d like to know is what was said to him[Tomori]. Why was he not taken and what were the reasons for it?”

Recall that England national team coach Gareth Southgate announced his 26-man squad for the tournament on Thursday and sparked reactions after he added an underperforming  Manchester United captain, Harry Maguire to the team.

Maguire is so bad that Manchester United as Erik ten Hag would rather playy Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane in his central defence.

But Southgate favoured Maguire ahead of Tomori, who is considered one of the best center defender in the Italian Seria A League.

“I’m sitting here confused thinking that we’re way behind those teams…” Ferdinand added and went on to advise the aggrieved players to use the disappointment as motivation.

The former England defender said the disappointed players should put Southgate’s pictures on their walls, “every wall in your house, and you use that as fuel. That’s what I think.”

“That catapulted me to being more professional, more driven. I used it as fuel. I don’t think that you can let that derail off your journey of becoming a top player.”
