Chelsea have opened up on why they signed their newest player and midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu this summer transfer window.

Ugochukwu moved to Stamford Bridge from French club Rennes after he penned a seven-year contract with the Blues.

The 19-year-old’s contract has an option for a further year at Stamford Bridge.

Reacting, Chelsea’s co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley said they signed Ugochukwu because he is an impressive young player who has made an impact in the French Ligue 1.

They said, as quoted by the club’s official website: “We’re delighted Lesley is joining Chelsea.

“He is an impressive young player who has already made his mark in Ligue 1.

“He has a huge amount of potential and we know he is going to continue to develop and improve.

“We are pleased that he has joined us in the U.S and that he will be able to integrate with the squad quickly.”
